WHAT IS A BRAND BOOK?

A brand book is a detailed overview of the way you desire for your brand to operate and to be presented to the public. It will include the guidelines for all communications and marketing material across all platforms for which you plan to promote and present your company.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN A BRAND BOOK?

Guidelines and/or standards are basically the rules one will operate under when any form of materials are being created on behalf of the business. These things will most likely include:

  • Logo specifications and usage rules
  • Tag line and usage rules
  • Color Palettes
  • Fonts and Style
  • Supporting graphic elements
  • Supporting colors
  • Design layouts and grids
  • Examples of correct and incorrect usage
  • Photography Style
  • Print, online, and social media layouts and applications
  • Editorial guidelines

WHEN IS THE TIME TO CREATE MY BRAND BOOK?

Ideally your brand book should be created and developed at the time you are creating your logo. You run the risk of creating a disjointed brand appearance if your brand standards are not completed upfront. This can cause confusion to your customers and impregnate an unprofessional impression.

SHOULD I CREATE MY BRAND BOOK OR SHOULD SOMEONE ELSE?

Although anyone can create their own brand book, we would highly recommend an experienced designer do it for you when they are developing your logo. If your logo has already been created, your designer should be able to still create you a Brand Book.

WHY IS A BRAND BOOK SO IMPORTANT?

A lot of times you may not be the one creating the marketing material for your business, but you will be handing it off to a third party. If you don't have these guidelines to provide to them, then you will most likely experience some of the below frustrations:

  • Bad or inappropriate usage of your logo
  • Wrong color usage
  • Wrong typeface usage
  • Wrong design elements
  • Incorrect photography/images and supporting elements
  • Cheap appearance due to lack of handling material properly
  • Inconsistent message or tone
  • Confusion to your audience/customers
  • ***AND THE BIG ONE...waste of time, energy, money and other resources on the part of both parties.

HOW SHOULD I USE MY BRAND BOOK?

You should use your Brand Book as a reference when any form of marketing material is being generated. This includes:

  • Print material
  • Website
  • Billboards
  • Physical marketing products

It should be used as the base information as to the start of any material created. All final productions should be compared to these guidelines to ensure the material supports brand cohesiveness.

*If a third party is creating material for you and they don't ask you for this material, you should provide it to them anyways. This ensures you have a reference to base the work you have asked them to do to meet your standards.
